I’m new to squash, what should I do to get started?

You can either contact hunter squash via this website, or reach out directly to one of the centres to discuss what options may suits you.

There are plenty of options to get started. You could even just book a court for a hit with a friend to see how you go, or alternatively you can organise a starter session with a coach.

I don’t know what I need to get started, do I need my own gear?

Whilst having your own gear may be something you want longer term, to get started any one of our centres will be able to help. You can initially hire some gear and then as you feel more comfortable, the same centres will be able to help with selection of gear; Rackets, balls, eyewear and foot ware. Hunter squash recommends DYD Squash (based out of Cardiff) as a supplier of local squash equipment.

Do I need to wear eyewear on court?

If you are over 19 years of age, it is highly recommended that you do wear eyewear. However it is not mandatory to do so.
All Juniors MUST wear eyewear, there are 2 main reasons. 1) Juniors are often at the start of their squash journey the ball could go anywhere 2) Centre and NSW Squash insurance is only applicable when juniors are wearing eyewear.

How much does it cost to play squash?

Most centres have court hire in the $25-35 an hour range (total court hire, not per person).

This is dependant on a few things, like time of day booking and whether or not you are a club member.

Are there any other squash centres around?

The Hunter area used to have in excess of 30 centres at one point, these days due to a number of factors we’ve lost a lot of courts.

Alot of effort is being done to try and maintain the current courts and where possible reopen older courts. See the clubs page for a list of Hunter based squash centres.

What age can kids start playing squash?

Kids can effectively start to learn to play squash not too long after they can wield a racket. Usually the hand eye co-ordination starts to kick in around the age of 6 onwards.
